C.O.P.S.
When writing with your child at home, always have him/her check over his/her writing to edit it for any mistakes. It is good practice for all writers, not just first graders. In order to help your child remember what to look for, have your child call on "C.O.P.S."!
C - Capitalization: Does the first letter of every sentence start with a capital letter? Are the names of people and months of the year capitalized? Is the word, "I" capitalized?
O - Organization: Did you write from left to right using all of the space on the line? Is your handwriting neat? Did you put a space between every word?
P - Punctuation: Does every sentence end with the correct punctuation (period, exclamation mark or period? Did you use commas between a series of items?
S - Spelling: Did you spell common sight words correctly? Did you spell words that we have learned in Letterland correctly? Did you spell unknown words using all sounds that can be heard?
